About the group

local community group

Who we are

We are a small voluntary group based in Oxfordshire, brought together by a shared interest in practical, community-led ways of saving money and staying connected locally. Everyone involved gives their time freely. Some of us have experience in community groups, others simply have an interest in how neighbours can work together in straightforward, sensible ways.

There is no organisation behind us, no funding arrangement, and no commercial interest. The group exists because a number of local residents felt there was a gap in clear, plain information about community buying groups and how they operate in real life.

What we focus on

Our focus is on information. Community buying groups can sound complicated or formal when they are described in official terms, but in practice they are often simple arrangements between local people. We aim to explain the basics in a way that feels accessible and grounded.

That includes what community buying groups are, how they tend to work, what they usually buy together, and the sort of things people may want to think about before getting involved. We try to avoid jargon and over-explanation, keeping the emphasis on everyday understanding rather than theory.

Why Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire is a mix of towns, villages, and rural communities, each with its own character and challenges. In some areas, shops are limited. In others, costs can be high or services feel distant. Community buying groups have taken different forms across the county, shaped by local needs and local people.

Our work is rooted in that local context. We aim to reflect the variety of communities across Oxfordshire rather than assuming one model fits everyone.

What we are not

We do not run buying groups ourselves, and we do not organise purchases. We do not sell anything, recommend suppliers, or promote particular schemes. The group is not a campaigning body and does not speak on behalf of any authority.

Our role is limited to sharing information and signposting ideas, so people can decide for themselves what, if anything, suits their circumstances.

How we work

The group meets informally and works at a steady pace. Information is gathered, discussed, and written up in plain language. Where things are uncertain or vary from place to place, we say so. If something depends on local arrangements or individual choices, that is made clear.

This approach keeps the work manageable and helps ensure that what we share feels realistic rather than idealised.

Keeping it simple

At its core, this project is about clarity. Community buying groups are not new, and they do not need to be complicated to be useful. By setting out the essentials calmly and honestly, we hope to support conversations within Oxfordshire communities and help people explore ideas at their own pace.

If nothing else, the aim is that readers come away better informed and better able to judge whether community buying is something they want to look into further.
